How many lumens do I need for an LED torch?

It depends on what you're using it for. For everyday pocket carry and household use, 200–600 lumens is more than enough. For camping, hiking, and general outdoor work, look for 1,000–2,000 lumens. For tactical, search-and-rescue, or serious bushwalking applications, 3,000+ lumens gives you headroom for distance and harsh conditions. Anything above 20,000 lumens is specialist territory — useful for emergency services, industrial inspection, or photography lighting, but overkill for most buyers.

What's the brightest LED torch in Australia?

The brightest production LED torches available in Australia exceed 100,000 lumens. Our highest-output models include the Imalent MS18 (100,000 lumens) and Acebeam X75 (80,000 lumens), both delivering daylight-level brightness from a handheld form factor. These are specialist tools — runtime at full power is typically only minutes — but they represent the current ceiling of what consumer LED torches can produce.

What's the difference between a tactical flashlight and an EDC torch?

Tactical flashlights are designed for defensive and professional use — typically 800+ lumens, with strobe modes, instant-on tail switches, hardened bezels, and momentary activation. EDC (every-day-carry) torches prioritise portability and convenience — usually under 1,500 lumens, with simple UIs, pocket clips, and lightweight construction. Many modern torches blur the line, offering tactical-grade output in EDC-friendly form factors. If you're carrying it daily, choose EDC. If it's for security, defence, or professional use, choose tactical.

Are LED torches waterproof?

Most quality LED torches carry an IP rating that tells you their water resistance. IPX4 means splash-resistant (fine for rain). IPX7 means it can survive submersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes — suitable for camping, fishing, and paddling. IPX8 covers submersion beyond 1 metre and is the standard for diving torches. Always check the IP rating before any underwater use; 'waterproof' without a rating is a marketing word, not a specification.

What batteries do LED torches use?

Most modern rechargeable LED torches use 18650 or 21700 lithium-ion cells, almost always with built-in USB-C charging so you don't need a separate charger. Smaller EDC and keychain torches often use 14500 or 16340 cells. Some torches support primary batteries (AA, AAA, or CR123A) as a backup, which is useful in emergencies when mains power isn't available. Check the spec sheet for the specific cell format — it's listed on every product page.

How long do rechargeable LED torches last on a single charge?

Runtime depends on output level. At maximum output, most high-lumen torches last 30 minutes to 2 hours. At medium output (typically 500–1,500 lumens), expect 4–10 hours. At low output (under 100 lumens), runtimes of 50–200+ hours are common. Look for the manufacturer's runtime curve — quality torches publish this for each output mode. Larger battery cells (21700 vs 18650) give you ~30% more runtime at the same brightness.

Are tactical flashlights legal in Australia?

Yes. Tactical flashlights are legal to own and carry across all Australian states and territories. They're not classified as weapons. Strobe-mode use, however, can fall foul of public-nuisance laws if directed at people, vehicles, or aircraft — common sense applies. Some workplaces and venues restrict any tools that could be used as a striking implement, so check your specific context if you carry one to work.
