The XTAR MC2 charges two Li-ion cells at once, each on its own channel at a full 1A, and fits everything from 10440 to 26650 — including protected 20700 and 21700, which most compact chargers physically cannot accommodate. It sets the charging current independently per cell, terminates accurately at 4.20V, and includes a 0V activation function to revive batteries left flat in stored torches. USB-C input runs it from a wall plug, power bank, car socket or solar panel, and the whole thing weighs 24g.

PRODUCT INFO

The XTAR MC2 is the two-slot version of XTAR’s simplest charger, and for most torch owners it is the more sensible buy. Two independent charging channels mean a spare cell is ready while the first one is still going in, and each slot charges at a full 1A rather than splitting a single supply between them. It measures 92 × 40 × 32mm and weighs 24g — small enough to live in a drawer, a pack lid or a glovebox permanently.

The detail that matters most is compatibility with protected 20700 and 21700 cells. A protection circuit adds several millimetres to a cell’s length, and plenty of budget chargers — including the earlier version of this very model — physically will not close on one. If you own protected 21700s, this is a specification to check rather than assume, and the current MC2 handles them.

The slots accept cells from 10440 up to 26650: 10440, 14500, 14650, 16340, 17335, 17500, 17670, 18350, 18490, 18500, 18650, 18700, 20700, 21700, 22650, 25500 and 26650. That covers essentially every lithium-ion torch cell in circulation. The one physical limit worth knowing is that the widest combination the bays will take at once is one 26650 alongside one 21700 — two 26650s will not sit side by side.

Charging is intelligent rather than fixed. The MC2 reads each cell independently and sets the appropriate current for its size and condition, so a small 10440 is not force-fed the same current as an 18650. Charging terminates at 4.20V (±0.05V) with a cut-off current of 120mA or less — accurate termination is what protects cell life over hundreds of cycles, and it is where cheap chargers quietly do damage.

The 0V activation function applies a small recovery current to cells that have self-discharged below the point a normal charger will recognise — the flat 18650 in a torch that has sat in a cupboard since last summer. Used sensibly it saves cells that would otherwise be binned, though a cell that has been deeply discharged for a long time may not be worth reviving.

Protection covers reverse polarity, short circuit and overcharge, and the design keeps cells cool throughout the cycle. The USB-C input draws 5V/2A at full speed and runs from a wall adapter, laptop, power bank, vehicle socket or solar panel, so it charges as easily at a campsite as on a desk. LED indicators per slot show charging progress and completion at a glance.

Key Features

  • Two independent charging slots — charge two cells at once, each managed separately
  • 1A constant current per slot (1A × 2) rather than one current split between bays
  • Compatible with PROTECTED 20700 and 21700 cells, which the earlier MC2 version could not take
  • Accepts cells from 10440 to 26650, covering effectively every Li-ion torch battery in common use
  • Intelligent current selection — reads each cell and sets the appropriate rate independently
  • Accurate cut-off at 4.20V (±0.05V) with ≤120mA termination current to protect cell life
  • 0V activation function revives over-discharged cells a normal charger would refuse
  • Reverse polarity, short circuit and overcharge protection
  • Runs cool throughout the charge cycle
  • USB-C input (5V/2A) — wall adapter, laptop, power bank, car socket or solar panel
  • Per-slot LED indicators showing charge progress and completion
  • Compact and light at 92 × 40 × 32mm and just 24g
  • Bay limit: one 26650 plus one 21700 is the widest combination that fits at once

Use Cases / Ideal For

  • Anyone running a torch with a spare cell — charge the pair together instead of waiting out two cycles back to back
  • Protected 21700 owners — one of the few compact chargers that physically accepts the extra length of a protection circuit
  • Torches without onboard charging — essential for lights like the Lumintop FW3A that take a bare cell and have no USB port
  • Mixed battery collections — 10440 through 26650 in one unit, with each slot setting its own current
  • Camping and travel — 24g and USB-C powered, so it runs from a power bank, vehicle socket or solar panel with no wall plug required
  • Reviving stored cells — 0V activation brings back batteries left flat in unused torches that other chargers will not start on
