The XTAR MC1 is a pocket-sized single-slot USB-C charger that handles 3.6V/3.7V Li-ion cells from 14500 to 26650 — including protected 21700, which most single-bay chargers physically cannot fit. A 1A constant charge current halves the charging time of the earlier 0.5A version, a 0V recovery function revives cells left flat in stored torches, and accurate 4.20V cut-off plus reverse-polarity and short-circuit protection look after long-term battery life. Shock-proof retention keeps the cell seated, and USB-C input runs it from a wall plug, power bank, car socket or solar panel.

PRODUCT INFO

The XTAR MC1 does one job and does it without fuss. It is a single-slot USB-C charger for 3.6V/3.7V lithium-ion cells, sized to slip into a pocket, glovebox or the lid of a pack, and it needs nothing more than a USB source to work. There is no display to read, no menu, no mode selection — drop a cell in and the LED tells you where you are.

Two things separate the current MC1 from the cheaper single-bay chargers it sits alongside. The first is the 1A constant charge current, which is double the 0.5A of the earlier version and cuts charging time roughly in half on a large cell. The second is compatibility with protected 21700 batteries — the slot is long enough to take the extra length that a protection circuit adds. Many single-bay chargers, including earlier MC1 revisions, physically will not close on a protected 21700.

The slot accepts cells from 14500 through to 26650, which covers essentially every torch battery in common use — 14500, 16340, 18350, 18500, 18650, 20700, 21700, 26650 and the sizes in between. If you own more than one torch, it is likely this one charger handles all of them.

The 0V recovery function is worth understanding. A lithium cell left flat in a drawer or an unused torch can drop below the voltage at which a normal charger will even acknowledge it, and most chargers simply refuse to start. The MC1 applies a small trickle current to bring such a cell back to a chargeable state. It is a genuinely useful feature for anyone with torches that sit unused between trips. It is also one to use with judgement — a cell that has been deeply discharged for a long period may be damaged, and reviving it is not always the right call.

Charging terminates at 4.20V (±0.05V), which is the correct full-charge voltage for lithium-ion. Accurate cut-off matters more than most buyers realise: a charger that overshoots shortens cell life every single cycle. Reverse polarity and short-circuit protection are built in, so inserting a cell backwards does nothing rather than causing damage.

Shock-proof retention holds the cell in the slot rather than letting it pop out if the charger is knocked or moved — a small detail that matters if you charge on a workbench, in a vehicle, or anywhere it might get bumped. The USB-C port means it runs from a wall adapter, laptop, power bank, vehicle USB socket or a solar panel, so it works as well on a camping trip as it does on a desk.

Use Cases / Ideal For

  • Torch owners with mixed battery sizes — one charger covers 14500 through 26650, so a drawer of different cells needs only this
  • Owners of torches without onboard charging — essential for lights like the Lumintop FW3A that take a bare cell and have no USB port
  • Protected 21700 users — one of the few single-bay chargers that physically accommodates the extra length of a protection circuit
  • Travel and camping — pocket-sized and USB-C powered, so it runs from a power bank, vehicle socket or solar panel with no wall adapter needed
  • Reviving unused cells — the 0V recovery function brings back batteries left flat in stored torches that other chargers will not touch
  • A spare for the car or toolbox — cheap enough to keep a second one where you need it, and small enough that it takes no room
